Why should teachers read books in Spanish to children who speak Spanish in their home?

It is very important for children whose home language is Spanish to have the opportunity to sing and read in Spanish at school. When children sing and read our books in both English and Spanish, they are building a bridge of language comprehension and enhancing their bilingual skills. The practice of singing the books in both English and Spanish creates a sense of belongingness for all children. This practice communicates to every child that all cultures are valued and celebrated in your setting.

Is it difficult to sing the books in Spanish? I do not speak Spanish fluently.

The songs are simple and repetitive. The catchy melodies help any singer – whether they are native speakers of Spanish or English – to improve their fluency and articulation of the lyrics. The goal is not perfection but progress and joyful musical expression!

Why are the translated words not the same from English to Spanish?

Translating lyrics requires careful consideration of the rhyme scheme and meter. The flow of the song depends on its structure, and often there are more syllables needed for an exact translation of the English song text than can possible fit in the melody. The translators included the essential meaning of the original English text by including key Spanish words and phrases. They also did their best to honor the musicality of the original tunes by including predictable rhymes and stress patterns.
